Donkey Lessons On Wealth

There is a story — centuries old — about a farmer who went to market to buy a donkey.

He found one that looked healthy and strong. Before paying, he arranged a one-day trial. He brought the animal home, led it into his stable, and stepped back to watch.

Most of his donkeys were calm and hardworking. They carried loads, pulled carts, did their share without complaint.

One was different. Lazy. Always the last to work, always first at the feed trough.

The new donkey looked around the stable for only a moment.

Then it walked straight over and stood beside the lazy one.

The next morning, the farmer returned it.

"How can you know anything after one day?" the seller asked.

"I watched which companion he chose," the farmer said. "If he prefers the laziest donkey in the stable, he will soon become just like him."

That story has stayed with me because the data in behavioral finance says the same thing, just in the language of research rather than fable.

Studies on social influence and financial decision-making — including work published in the Journal of Financial Economics — consistently show that the people and advisors around us shape our financial behavior in ways that income and intelligence alone cannot predict. We mirror the risk tolerance, the spending norms, and the planning habits of those closest to us, often without realizing it.

Which means one of the highest-leverage financial decisions you can make has nothing to do with picking stocks.

It has to do with choosing who you sit next to.

ClearPath Wealth Strategies was built on exactly that premise.

Their approach — operating under the Wealth Builders philosophy — starts not with a generic portfolio template, but with a structured conversation about your specific goals, your family's priorities, and the future you are actually working toward. The strategy comes after the listening, not before it.

Right now, they are offering a complimentary financial strategy review — no cost, no obligation, no product pitch disguised as advice. It is a working session designed to identify where your current financial direction may have gaps, and what a strategy built specifically around your goals could look like instead.

If you have accumulated something worth protecting — or you are in the active years of building it — the company you choose to guide that process matters more than most people realize.

The farmer in the fable knew that after one day.

You do not have to wait that long.
